Improving Your Reserve Capacity – Part 3
Sufficiency of Needs
In the first two parts of this series, I introduced you to the concept of Reserve Capacity, the three things needed to re-establish balance to your “eco-system” and how to perform the first step – Detoxification.
I would like to focus on step two in this article – Providing Sufficiency of Needs.
Notice I did not say to “handle deficiency.” After all, many deficiencies are actually an
indication of too much of something else. Have you ever experienced a deficiency of sleep because you are having too much fun? (This is a common experience among college kids.) Over time, if this imbalance is allowed to continue, what happens? That’s right, you get sick.
You see, when it comes to human health and wellness, the story of Goldilocks applies…things need to be “just right.” Too much or too little of anything leads to the need for compensation in the body. Compensations, over time, always lead to an imbalance in the eco-system of the body. Get out of balance enough and you will have symptoms.
After all, your body never does anything wrong. It does the EXACT right things in order to help you either adapt or compensate, relative to the environment it finds itself in. This is known as the innate drive of the body – to survive. I call it the Primary Mandate which is established at the point of conception.
So let’s look at this idea of sufficiency of needs…
Your physical, emotional, chemical and spiritual needs must be in the proper ratio and proportion.
Your body needs just the right amount of nutrients, just the right amount of air (air is actually a mixture of oxygen, nitrogen, and many other gases – straight oxygen for too long would kill you), the right amount of water (too much is called drowning!), just the right amount of affection (too little is unhealthy – too much leads to suffocation) and the exact right amount of nerve supply from the brain to the organs and cells of the body (too much or too little is like electricity to a light bulb…either way, it doesn’t work).
But, the exact right specific ratio of sufficiency of needs is also highly individual due to your own unique genetic make up. This is why a one-size-fits-all dosage of medication, diet plan, exercise plan and teaching style simply does not work.
You are a unique individual with your own individual genetic make-up. And, although there are basic principles to optimal human health and wellness that apply, you require your own fine-tuning to ensure your own optimal Reserve Capacity and genetic expression. This is why we take a very detailed and individualized approach to our nutrition counseling, chiropractic and life-style coaching. Because you have your own unique individual genetic make-up and unique requirements, it requires YOU to take charge of your own health, wellness and life-style choices in order for you to achieve the best version of you possible.
In this context, the doctor-patient relationship needs to be more like that of a coach and athlete. The coach can give instruction, insight and motivation – but the athlete needs to play the game.
If we work together, and you ensure your sufficiency of needs in proper ratio and proportion, you will achieve and maintain your reserve capacity and be able to adapt, rather than simply compensate to the physical, emotional, chemical and spiritual stressors of your life.
