How to make yourself “Bulletproof”
Does your morning ritual serve you? Does it set you up to be the best version of you possible for the day ahead?
Think about how you start the day. After you wake up and go to the bathroom, what happens? I bet it’s a similar routine every day. If you are like most people, you wake up, hit the floor running, grab a coffee on your way out the door and you’re off to the races. Right?
Well, there is a better way. We will go into more details about some new habits that will make for a better morning ritual another time, but for now, let’s just focus on one thing…That Cup-O-Joe that gets you rolling!
The health benefits of coffee have been debated for years. Some studies show that it increases blood pressure, exacerbates hypoglycemia, increases irritability and causes increased anxiety.
Recent investigation into the way coffee is produced asks the question, “Is it the caffeine in the coffee that causes these negative effects or is it the mold that grows on the bean that produces a mycotoxin, which leads to the negative effects? An interesting concept…
What we do know is that coffee, in moderate dosages, has been shown to increase mental and physical performance. It is also loaded with antioxidants and polyphenols, which have positive effects on health and immunity. Coffee has also been shown to increase insulin sensitivity and appears to help in maintaining health body composition-the muscle, bone and fat ratio.
So, how can you super-charge your coffee so that you get the maximum benefits while minimizing the negative effects?
First, start with the right kind of coffee beans. Most of the outlets that sell coffee sell beans that have been mass-produced in order to meet the demand of the marketplace.
If you want the best beans, and the beans least likely to carry mycotoxin producing mold, start with beans, which come from a single origin, not a mixture of the same type of beans, but grown in different places. Also, make sure they come from high altitude farms, are wet processed and roasted in small batches. Mass production leads to inferior coffee quality.
Next, add MCT oil and GRASS-FED butter. That’s right! Add a bunch of fat!
Bulletproof coffee consists of coffee made with very high quality beans, MCT (medium Chain Triglycerides) and butter made from the milk of grass-fed (not grain-fed) cows.
MCT oil is usually produced from coconut or palm oil. You can substitute straight coconut oil, but MCT oil is best since it is very easily absorbed. The benefits of MCT oil are increased energy, improved metabolism, reduction of body fat and stable blood sugar. It is also helpful in balancing thyroid hormones and reducing inflammation. If you decide to use coconut oil, you will get the added benefit of the immune boosting effect of the lauric acid found in coconut oil. About a tablespoon is all you need.
Next, you add grass-fed butter. Grass-fed butter is 5 times higher in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) than conventional grain-fed butter. It also contains vitamins A and K2, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in the correct ratio, and arachidonic acid, which helps in providing quick energy and improving brain function. Butter also contains large amount of butyrate, which is helpful in maintaining the health of the gut. Again, about 1 Tablespoon is all you need. Some people prefer 2.
Pour the coffee in a blender, add the MCT oil and butter and blend for about 30 seconds. If you choose to add some flavor, add some raw cacao butter and stevia. We also add a scoop of Tri-Alkali to get the added benefit of neutralizing the acidity of the coffee even more, while providing the proper ratio of calcium, magnesium, potassium and vitamin D3 to our daily intake.
Bulletproof coffee will help make you more alert, boost your energy and sustain your mental clarity and physical endurance well into the late morning without making you feel jittery. For those of you who make it a habit to only have a cup of coffee as your breakfast, try making your coffee Bulletproof. You will feel the difference it makes to your day.
